“What I Want You to Know” (Student Panel)

Students open up about life with a disability. An interactive event, during which the students encourage questions from the audience, “What I Want You to Know” illuminates the experiences of students with disabilities as they navigate through life. Heavy refreshments will be served.

Disability As Identity: Workshop led by Dr. Anjali Forber-Pratt

Dr. Anjali Forber-Pratt is a professor in Vanderbilt’s Department of Department of Human and Organizational Development and serves as a member of Vanderbilt’s Kennedy Center for Research on Human Development. She is also a 2008 Paralympic bronze medalist in wheelchair racing.

One of her research interests is disability identity development and we are excited to have her lead a workshop focusing on this important topic. Heavy refreshments will be served. Because of limited space, please RSVP to

Adaptive Sports Night

Jackson, Mississippi’s Rollin’ Tigers Adaptive Sports team will be on campus for an exciting wheelchair basketball exhibition game. They will demonstrate other wheelchair sports, as well, include wheelchair tennis and softball and will share their experiences competing on the state and national levels. Dr. Anjali Forber-Pratt, Paralympic bronze medalist in wheelchair racing, will host this event. Come and join this fun, interactive event!

Keynote Address and Presentation of ACCESS Award

The University of Mississippi is honored to host Dr. Anjali Forber-Pratt as this year’s keynote speaker.

Dr. Forber-Pratt received her Ph.D. in Human Development from the University of Illinois- Urbana-Champaign and is a professor in Vanderbilt’s Department of Department of Human and Organizational Development. She also serves as a member of Vanderbilt’s Kennedy Center for Research on Human Development. Her research interests focus on:
1. disability identity development,
2. perceptions of inclusion, and
3. victimization experiences in school.

Born in Kolkata, India and adopted by a loving family from Massachusetts, Dr. Forber-Pratt participates in competitive wheelchair sports, including downhill skiing and wheelchair track and field. She represented the US at the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games where she won two bronze medals in wheelchair racing. She is a powerful activist committed to the removal of barriers that impact the inclusion of people with disabilities in sporting, education, and work-related environments.

After the keynote address, Student Disability Services will present the annual ACCESS Award to one faculty member and one staff member who have shown a commitment to disability as a social justice and human rights issue. Recipients of the ACCESS Award are nominated each year by students with disabilities on the UM campus. Buffet lunch will be provided.

University Hand Band

Experience the beauty of American Sign Language at the University Hand Band’s annual concert. This year’s concert will feature the Ole Miss Gospel Choir. Held this year at the Pavilion, the Hand Band Signing Rave is always a highlight of Disability History Month. Come enjoy this energetic and exciting experience!
